How Labguru's Electronic Lab Notebook Protects Your Information

Written by Lir Lutao Shahar | Jan 27, 2021 5:41:00 PM

In 2021, security is a major concern for research organizations. With the ever-decreasing cost of drug development and the race to reach market, it is important for organizations to make sure their data is secure from competitors and backed up to prevent losses.

This is a clear advantage of electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) over traditional paper notebooks, which can be easily lost or stolen.

However, not any digital solution is enough to keep this precious information safe. To pick the best ELN for data security, look for one that can archive, store, protect, and extract the information and files you create.

How does Labguru Electronic Lab notebook keep your data secure?

Backup

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket — Information stored in one physical location risks getting lost forever in case of disaster, which can be catastrophic for research lab management. Labguru’s data is backed up in different locations:

  • All data is also backed up daily to the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Database. For more information regarding AWS’s data security, click the following link: https://aws.amazon.com/compliance/data-center/controls/
  • All files are also regularly replicated to another location within the AWS data centers.

This backup method ensures that no information will be lost.

Data Encryption

All communication between Labguru servers and within the Labguru electronic lab notebook app is encrypted using AES 256-bit traffic encryption. Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is the first and only publicly accessible cipher approved by the US National Security Agency (NSA) for protecting top-secret information. AES-256 is practically unbreakable by brute force based on current computing power, making sure communications are as safe as it gets.

Local Backup

In addition to our automatic, built-in backup methods, Labguru allows customers to back up their information locally using the “Data Export” feature. This is a system-wide export that converts all of the customer’s data into universally usable formats (PDF, Excel, etc) that can be opened without access to the Labguru site or app. The data is arranged neatly in folders representing all the different modules. This export can be run up to once a week, allowing customers to keep an up-to-date copy of all information in their electronic lab notebook. Individual modules can also be backed up separately.

Recover Historical Versions

AWS provides a backtrack feature that makes it possible to recover specific historical versions of data. If necessary, we can go back to any specific minute you request in the past 30 days of the database’s timeline. Labguru also takes 30 full-system stand-alone snapshots every day to allow recovery of specific versions.

Two Factor Authentication

Labguru offers a two-factor authentication function. This service is used in conjunction with the Google Authenticator App and requires scanning a barcode, receiving a temporary login code on your mobile, and providing it in the sign-in as extra proof of identity. The feature provides an extra layer of login security to standard password login.
